Aycock grads hold reunion at Fair Park

It’s been almost 50 years since anyone graduated from Rockdale’s Aycock High School but the “Purple Tiger” alumni turned out in force Saturday evening.

A crowd estimated at 150, most of them Aycock graduates, re-lived old times in the New Salem HD Clubhouse at Fair Park.

Aycock was Rockdale’s school for African-Americans prior to desegregation in the mid 1960s and graduates gather each third weekend in June to remember, forge new relationships and renew old ones.

This year’s honor classes were graduates of 1950, 1955 and 1960.

State winner Susie Sansom Piper, longtime Rockdale Reporter contributor, who served as Aycock’s last principal, got to renew a special relationship this year.

Sharon Williams Stein, Miss Aycock 1962, and now a resident of Clinton, Mississippi, attended the 2010 reunion.

“Sharon won the 1961-62 state solo singing contest and I was her coach,” Piper recalled.

Both women still remember the song that Stein sang.

“It was ‘The Lass With The Delicate Air’,” Piper recalled.

Speaker was Hari Jones, assistant director and curator of the Washington, D. C.-based African-American Civil War Freedom Foundation and Museum.

Christian comedian Rodney Geter of Round Rock performed prior to the banquet.

Doris Phillips served as mistress of ceremonies and introduced Uneeda Page Corbett who opened the ceremony with a song.

Invocation was by Rev. Dennis Brooks, a member of the AHS graduating class of 1960.

Eldora Richards welcomed the crowd.

Praise dancers Ivory Douglas, Jardon Lewis and Denitra Rideaux performed.

Former AHS teachers were recognized and Rockdale High School Head Football Coach Jeff Miller recognized AHS graduates who have been selected for the Rockdale Sports Hall of Honor.

Also on the program were descendants of the honored classes and Lee Alcorn, president of the alumni association.

A dance and social followed the banquet and a silent auction was held to benefit the reunion organization.

On Friday night, AHS graduates and friends gathered at the home of Preston Moultrie for a meet-and-greet session.

Darlene Douglas served as reunion organizer. Website is www.aycock-alumni.com.
